I'm with stupid

Yeah, so I am trying something a little different... haven't painted with a computer since May. I decided one day to paint the most dumb possible thing, and this is what happened. There are about 20 of these... some of them are in a little group shew in Ptown. Scary biz.

tears of a clown 2 & 3, both about 19" x 14" oil on paper

empathy trigger (love me), 4" x 4", oil on panel

you look pretty good from here, about 19" x 21", oil on paper

dunno what to call this one...

ooooh! these are cool. "tears of a clown" is amazing close up. i love those eyelashes running off the edges like that. "you look pretty good from here" is my favorite though... beautiful economy of marks.

Love them! I agree w/Dubz about the economy of markmaking. I also like the sense of storytelling, anthropomorphizing the forms (did I just butcher that word?). They feel very psychologically charged, through formal means (in "Empathy Trigger," the emotional assignment of color, the scale difference between the red and the green shapes, and the placement of the cowering little red guy in the left-hand corner). They're funny as hell. Hmmm, eyeballs as metaphor... rich terrain you're mining, Sloth!!! More, please.

Hi, PD!!!

hi!!!

I'm at NIPS today... the chilluns are painting away upstairs, I am taking a break from cracking the whip to make them paint faster, FASTER.

Last night, I put together a little talk on digital abstraction, presented it this a.m. There is a painter I included who is in the Triumph of Painting... I know him. His werkz are very big and ambitious. Made me feel 2 inches tall, painting-wise. Sorry and abject. Why can't I seem to triumph? Huh?

Slothy, look around in your shack--there is triumph all around. It is a shame that all the little painterly moments in these don't come through, because they really contribute to what JD is talking about. The empathy factor, etc. And it is really amazing to be around so many of them.

Thanks, guys! I am still a little shy and uncertain about them. They feel like a tentative stip towards something. One day soon I will extract meself from the Cod and the 'rents and the NIPS, get back into my studio and take that next step; that is the hope, that is the dream. In the meanwhile I am painting sand dunes. I mean I am doing paintings of sand dunes, not physically painting them, which would be a challenge.
