'The Taking of Pelham One Two Three," 1974. Excellent and seminal suspense movie about four hijackers in NYC who kidnap a 6 train. Great cast, including Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, and Jerry Stiller. Intense and gripping, with plenty of gallows humor. A hilarious and loving, if stereotyped, portrait of New Yorkers in the 70s...

Robert Shaw (brandishing a gun): "You'll all remain seated. Anybody who tries to rise is going to get shot."

NYC subway riders: (scattered laughter)

Brilliant score by David Shire. Read the Voice review here. Oh, and! Be sure to read the credits at the end... they include characters like "The Hippie" and "The W.A.S.P." and "The Homosexual."

I rewatched this movie a couple of years ago, it IS amazing! It's so to the point, no backstory, no romance, no explosions just suspense.

I love any movie set in New York in the 70's -80's. The Eyes of Laura Mars is a good one, Annie Hall, Taxi Driver...

Another great moment:

Mayor's Advisor: "The buck stops with you, sir."

Mayor: "Shit! Piss! Fuck!"

Slothers, I will rent this as it's been too long since I've seen it.

This morning I've decided the number 2 train should be hi-jacked by some folks. A group of gay cowboys with ropes who come in and lasso all the annoying Wall St. couples off the train and make it safe for all people who hate PDA with PDAs. Really, I see the most annoying couples on this train. Sometimes I see them in the a.m. and p.m. of the same day (same folks) and it makes me ill.

pd, are they smashed against eachother the whole train trip? for some reason this makes me crazy. I want to shout - it's 9AM people! wtf. and I especially hate it when there is a couple with incredible "look at me" bad fashion. think bedford/lorimer street. I shouldn't care, I know, but it irritates me. When arthur and I ride together, which is rare, we hardly talk to eachother. It's too early for stuff.

This movie looks great. I netflix now.

YES!!! Fb, it drives me nutz. They are smashed together and totally rubbing up against eachother with briefcases at their feet. Why does it drive me so crazy?? UGH And then one gets off before another and the one left o the train is dreamy-eyed for a moment and then turns on the PDA.

they must be punished pd. we must release upon them the avian flu combined with paralysis of the hand (pda paralysis) or just infect them with genital herpes. I don't know. something must be done.

you know, late at night, i am less offended. afternoon even. it's just not something i want to see on the morning rush hour to beige. especially when bad fashion is involved, and ESPECIALLY when there are bare dangling bellies outside of half-shirts.

I agree. At night, after a few drinks..etc. But the half-shirt, bad fasion pda is the worst.

Herpes must be in liquid form and sprayed generously on train.

eyem busy in the lab right now working on a ray-gun that shoots herpes sores... will distribute as needed.

BB: I think I've seen that couple before. I do like the towering model types with the short guys.

I love love love the spidey-dance, PD!

Through "la danse" spidey is trying to communicate his love of all humankind, which is all the more intense, poignant, and glowing due to his radioactive blood. Also his unfulfilled desire to eat giant flies.

Oh, a subject close to my heart: NYC in the seventies!! A wonderfully crazy and dirty and lower-middle-class time. Pelham 1-2-3 ROCKS, Sloth, you're right. Two more must-see's for NYC 70s street scenes are The French Connection (amazing subway and street chase scene!!), and Marathon Man. Love. Also the opening credits for The Odd Couple always makes me misty. Corny, thanks for the Eyes of Laura Mars rec; will rent.

Oh, and PD, Spidey's dance is graceful and quite lyrical. Is also making me misty-eyed.

La Danse is right, Slothy. Spidey is quite the performer. He left Martha Graham's company 'cause he was spending too much time on the floor.

Sloth, I'll trust your fine taste in movies and put this one in my queue. Im thinking about getting a tv tuner card to take still photos. All of our blogs would be better with video and audio. Anyone here have experience with this?

If you requested that Netflix carry Russ Meyer films after I put out my plea (months ago) then thanks. I dont understand why family friendly Blockbuster has them and Netflix doesnt.

Spidey should try out for chippendales

Maybe a little late to get into the game, but I wish to add Klute, Dog Day Afternoon and (one of the best - if not the best- movies about the media) Network. Although made in the late 60's, the opening shot of Rosemary's Baby is also fantastic use of shooting in the big apple. Oh, and Midnight Cowboy, Manhattan and, of course, Taxi Driver.
